Human-Centered Leadership: Solving What’s Beneath the Issue

Yesterday, I shared a simple idea.
Most workplace conflict isn’t about the issue. It’s about what people are fighting for underneath it.
Control. Do I have a say?
Connection. Am I understood and trusted?
Recognition. Do I matter?
When those feel threatened, people don’t collaborate. They protect.
So what do we do with that as leaders?
This is where Human-Centered Design comes in.
At its core, Human-Centered Design is about understanding the human experience before trying to fix the problem. Not just what people are doing, but what they’re feeling, what they’re fearing, what they need.
This is the work I do every day as a human-centered designer and practitioner, using this approach to lead my team, partner with clients, and shape the work we do at Experience Willow.
Human-Centered Design has been used for years to design better products and customer experiences. But what happens when we apply it to leadership?
Human-Centered Leadership is the practice of designing the conditions where people can do their best work. It means curiosity before control, understanding before solving, empathy before action.
Because whether we acknowledge it or not, every leader is shaping an experience for the people they're leading. And in that experience, people are constantly asking themselves:
Do I have a say?
Am I understood and trusted?
Do I matter here?
Those are the same human needs sitting underneath most workplace tensions.
The best leaders don’t rush to fix the surface issue. They slow down long enough to understand what’s happening beneath it. They ask better questions. They create space for real answers. They make it safe for people to be honest.
And when that happens, trust builds, energy shifts, performance follows.
Human-Centered Leadership isn’t soft. It’s intentional. It’s precise. It’s designed.
Because when you get the human experience right, everything else gets easier.
