Why do acts of kindness sometimes bring us to tears? Inspired by Netflix's Little House on the Prairie, this essay explores compassionate leadership, belonging, and why the choices we make every day shape the cultures and communities we create.

The courage to be seen does not stop with us. It becomes a responsibility to create the kind of safety, dignity, and belonging that helps others show up fully and grow into who they are capable of becoming.

For years, I believed belonging required sameness. Life taught me something different. The strongest relationships and healthiest teams are not built on perfect agreement, but on respect, trust, and the safety to bring our full selves into the room.

For years, hiding felt like protection. What I eventually learned was that the cost of hiding extends far beyond the thing we're trying to conceal. It affects our relationships, our sense of belonging, and the energy we have available to fully engage in life and work.

For much of my life, I became both a chameleon and an editor. One helped me fit in. The other helped me stay hidden. This Pride Month, I’m reflecting on authenticity, belonging, and the courage it takes to be fully seen.

Love in leadership may feel unconventional, but it drives trust, belonging, and performance. The strongest teams succeed because they genuinely care for and support each other.

Vulnerability in leadership isn’t weakness—it’s courage. When leaders embrace emotional openness and risk, they create space for creativity, connection, and stronger performance.

Empathy in leadership helps leaders understand perspectives, build trust, and make better decisions. In complex organizations, empathy is becoming one of the most critical leadership skills.
