Resilience in Leadership: Winning When Things Slow Down

Today I’m facilitating a leadership offsite.
And yes…I’m also repping my Illini. 🧡💙🏀
Because tonight, we take on the Houston Cougars in the Sweet Sixteen.
I read a line this morning that stuck with me: “On paper, Houston is built to slow Illinois down.”
Great systems. Disciplined execution. The right leadership.
Sound familiar?
Because that’s what most teams face every day. Not a lack of talent, but an environment designed to test them—and where resilience in leadership becomes the difference.
And the best teams?
They don’t just rely on what they do well. They adapt. They defend. They find another way to win.
That’s what Illinois will need tonight:
Not just offense. But discipline. Not just talent. But trust. Not just momentum. But resilience when the game slows down.
And honestly, that’s what we’re working on in the room today.
Because resilience in leadership isn’t about performing when everything is flowing. It’s about who your team becomes when things get tight, messy, and hard to score.
The best teams don’t just play fast. They know how to win slow.
Here we go, Illini, here we go. 🏀🧡💙
